I am in the same boat as your spouse. I am on H4. Just today I got a very harsh reply from an attorney saying that I cannot volunteer in any way that is related to my field ( I am an IT pro) even in a non-profit organization. I am little bit upset after this episode because I wanted to volunteer for a non-profit Org.
In the land of opportunities I don't have opportunity even to volunteer in a non-profit organization to keep in touch with my subject. First time I realized that I am living in a prison.
Don't take my word. Consult an attorney because H4 holder volunteering in one's own field is illegal it seems. Wish you all the best.

You can volunteer to any field but not 40 hours / week , there are limitations i beleive 4 to 8 hours/week and not for cash reimbursement. Usually Org gives you free lunch voucher or something, thats it.

Hi,
When we apply for H1 Extension we need to get an approval from DOL before posting( Earlier it used be online and from july 1 2009 this cannot be approved online).
It seems as per the new DOL Requirements two notices has to be posted at two locations ( One at Employers office and one at the client location. U.S. Department of Labor (DOL)
regulations requires that a Posting Notice be posted within your organization in two conspicuous locations for 10 consecutive business days)
As this H1-B posting info might contain the salary details etc. What happens if the client policies doesn't allow posting such notices ?? so what other options are available in such a case..
could some one please provide more details reg this...

it is nice to see people with older priority dates are getting approved. At least USCIS is working in proper order rather than in wild pattern
If USCIS would have been working in proper order, I should have got approval long ago as my PD had been current for more than a year. Anyway this is over can't complain. Good luck for all those waiting.

I was checking vfs-usa.co.in website and in "Immigrant Visas for East & West " section, its written

depends on how you filed it, if its premium processing, you get a decision in 4 to 6 days.. amazing what an extra 1000 dollars can do. I waited 4 years to get my labor approved and I-140 in 14 days with premium processing.

I am also on my 9th year of extension and Recently I changed jobs ( from fortune 500 to another fortune 500) and the new company suggested to have my 9th+ years H1 extension and have applied for the same. I just received the approval yesterday with in 30 days. The only reason I moved is so that I can refile in EB2, I have Masters+MBA prior to my old Labor, but couldn't apply as the old company job descriptions did not support it. With recent changes in I140 premium eligibility criteria, any one with H1 of 6years or more eligible for it and so you might want to extend your H1 and use Advance Parole to travel if you are thinking of any portability to EB2 in future.

On reading a bit about PIMS, it seems that if your information is not in the KCC, then the US consulate sends a request to Kentucky for information. It turns out KCC has access to the CLAIMS3 system used by the USCIS, and they generally respond in 48 hrs. Here is the link:

I don't want to discourage you, but IV has looked into all these options earlier and has realized that it would be fruitless to try and ask our lazy politicians to take up our case with the US govt. More over this is an internal matter of US govt and Indian government cannot influence their policies and laws. Why would you expect Indian govt. to fight for you, when you left the Indian shores and want to settle down in US for your comfort?
Having said that, if you do have contacts and would like to take the lead in reaching out to the Indian govt, IV will support you. So please do the honors.

Folks,
How are the taxi charges from Chennia airport to the town or station ? Do the drivers charge whatever they feel like or is it controlled?
My parents are leaving back from the US and will be landing in Chennai, they are not from Chennai....so not sure if I should try to book a taxi before hand...or the charges are controlled ? Also, do they have something like pre-paid taxi ?
The flight (emirates) lands at 3 or 4 am.
Also, any recomendations for Hotels ? Ideally near the railway station.

Not bad, got visa approved same day. This was my 7th year H1 extension, while I485 is pending, applied last year July..
Got appointment a month before. Consulate automatically checks for PIMS verification within next 2-3 days..I got banamex receipt made by Mexican assistance services, in fact there are many people / company willing to get this receipt made for nominal charges..
Drove to Nogales, AZ. Parked car in one of the parking lot. Cross border by foot through revolving door. No one is there to check any immigration paper for Mexico. People from India do need visa to visit Mexico but rule seems to be bit vague. To visit US consulate in Nogales, one can get local tourist permit (which can be obtained at POA in Mexico immigration. I got Mexico visa for 6 month multiple entry through local Mexican consulate in US. In retrospect, probably I wasted time and money for nothing..No one bothers to check any documents in Mexico, in fact I have look hard to find someone in immigration to stamp my entry in Mexico..
Anyway, got Cab for $7 to US consulate. Reached there at 7.30am. Appointment time was at 8am. But this doesn't matter as consulate will let all Mexican labor visa applicant to go in first (approx 150 of them). I stood in line for about 2 hours, finally got in at 9.30. Process was smooth from there on..got biometrics / photo done and then interview for 2 minutes..IO didn't ask much, just few simple questions..Didn�t even check any extra document. I was advised to come at 3 pm to collect visa which I did. (Spent 4 hours -11am to 3pm in nearby Nogales mall)
Got return cab to border. Took about 30 minutes get new I 94 made. Entered Nogales, AZ comfortably. Car was still parked safely...Returned home happily...Will continue to wait from GC, stuck in PD of April 2006 in EB2
